To kill a mockingbird summary

Part 1

‘Shoot all the bluejays you want if you can hit them, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird’. The story takes place in Maycomb, a fictional town in  Alabama, United States. The novel is set in mid 1930’s, a time when racism and atrocities against blacks was at it’s peak. Whites were insanely narrow minded, especially in the small town of Maycomb

The novel focuses on the clever and tomboyish protagonist Scout Finch, her older brother Jem Finch and their father Atticus Finch, a man with high moral standards who is a lawyer and has been widowed when Scout was just two. The Finch household also included Calpurina, their black housekeeper who was more like a family member to them.

To kill a mockingbird starts with the childish experiences of Scout whose age is 6 and her older brother Jem aging 10. Jem and scout were raised by Calpurina in the absence of their mother. During summer, Dill, a rather troubled kid moves next door and soon becomes their best friend.

The children soon became hugely interested or rather obsessed with the mysterious neighbor Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley. There were millions of rumors about their mysterious neighbor and Scout, Jem and Dill were very curious to know more about him.

Part 2

The story takes a turn when Atticus agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a black man, ‘the mockingbird’ of the novel who is falsely accused of raping and beating a white woman named Mayella Ewell  and the whole community of Maycomb was surprised and angered by Atticus’s decision to defend a black man. As a consequence Atticus was continuously being threatened by the residents of Maycomb.

But Atticus, being a man of high moral standard stands up for the innocent Tom Robinson and defends him in the court of justice. And because of Atticus’s decision Scout and Jem had to face a number of racial insults and barbs. Scout, being tomboyish dealt with the barbs using her fists but Scout soon gets troubled due to her behavior and gets scolded by Atticus and her aunt Alexandra.

Part 3

In the last part of the novel Atticus provides a more legitimate and viable explanation that Tom Robinson isn’t guilty of the charges and instead it was Bob Ewell, Mayella’s drunkard father who bet her. But still the jury convicts Tom and he gets imprisoned. He later tries to run away from the prison and gets shot by the police.

Things starts getting normal in Maycomb after this horrible incidence but Bob Ewell was seeking revenge from Atticus. When Jem and Scout were returning home from the halloween party, Bob suddenly attacked them and Jem was badly hurt but they finally managed to escape and to everyone’s surprise, it was Boo Radley who saved their lives.

Soon the sheriff informs Atticus that Bob was found dead under the tree as he fell on his own knife. As Scout learns that it was Boo who saved them, she finally starts to see Boo as a normal human being and shows great sympathy towards him.

To kill a mockingbird summary: Review

The novel is undoubtedly one of the greatest piece of literature. The novel is a bit slow in the beginning but keeps you engaged. Harper Lee portrays Atticus Finch as a ‘Man’, a man of faith and honor and someone you can never hate. First part mostly consists of childish experiences of Scout which is beautifully narrated.

The novel is a bit complex in the beginning but you slowly fall in love with the characters. The second part is more than enough to keep you engaged and it becomes insanely difficult to keep you eyes out of the pages. Atticus’s words can give you millions of life lessons.

Scout’s tomboyish character also has an essence of feminism. Aunt Alexandra hates her for this as Scout dosen’t meet her standards or conception of ‘a lady’ which is very orthodoxy and quite relatable even in 2020.

The novel is set up in a time when blacks were considered inferior. Harper Lee portrays Tom Robinson as ‘mockingbird’, a bird who does no harm to others and just entertains us with it’s melodious music.

“A man is never born equal, some are born rich, some poor but there’s one place where all men are equal, The Judiciary.” These words by Atticus would stick in your mind till the end. These words is a message by Harper Lee to the whole world. These words portrays the true meaning of Judiciary that every single person is equal before the justice.

The bond between Calpurina and the children was very strong. Calpurina raises the children as her own and loves them the same way. This depicts the ultimate message that love knows no boundaries.

The conviction of Tom Robinson by the jury even after a more plausible explanation of the matter by Atticus shows the extent of racism in the society. And at last a heartwarming gesture by Scout to Boo Radley would melt your heart.

Personally, the novel is great and you should read the novel once in your lifetime. The novel is immensely relatable to the recent incidents of George Floyd and Jacob Black.
